The gentle waters of Malaekahana Bay are safe for all water sports - from boogie boarding to snorkeling. Fishing from nearby is some of the best on the Windward Coast; Endangered sea turtles (hono) make Malaekahana Bay their home; For birders, the James Campbell National Refuge is only a short hike from the beach; Just 600 feet offshore is Moku Auia Seabird Sanctuary (Goat Island), home to over 10 species of seabirds.

The Legend of Malaekahana: Manuwahi somehow, always knew when Kamehameha the Great was going to attack, he would move everyone (mauka) to the hills, when the warriors landed there was no one to fight. The Kamehameha chiefs referred to Malaekahana and Manuwhi, as the place of the sand crab. It seemed that the village would disappear like sand crabs into their holes. One Kamehameha Chief, Kahala'iu , was convinced that Mauwahi was aided by the gods, he deserted Kamehameha and joined Mauwahi. To this day he is known as the only chief that revolted and lived.

Pu'uhonua O' Malaekahana (place of refuge) is magical, giving people a place to meditate and dream. People from all over the world are drawn here to heal, physically and emotionally. The Malaekahana Moku (district) was never conquered by the Kamehameha the Greats army. A renown healer, the Kahuna, Manuwahi called Malaekahana home, as a Kumu (teacher) in the Hawaiian art of Huna and the medicinal uses of plants and herbs. Manuwahis' spirit is still felt and held in this land today.
